Definition

What is local SEO for rehab centers?

Local SEO for rehab centers is the work of making your facility appear in Google Maps and local search results when people nearby look for detox, residential, PHP, IOP or outpatient care.

It centres on your Google Business Profile, but it doesn't stop there. Google also looks at your website's location and program pages, how consistently your name, address and phone number appear across the web, the reviews you've earned and how you respond, and which local organisations mention you.

For treatment centers the stakes are higher than for most local businesses. A family searching “detox near me” is often in crisis, calls one of the first three results, and rarely scrolls. If a national network, a directory or a lead broker occupies those three spots, the call goes somewhere else.

How Google ranks local results

The three local ranking factors, applied to treatment

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Here's what each one means for a treatment center.

Relevance

How well your profile and site match the search. The right primary and secondary categories, a service listed for each level of care, and program pages that use the words families use — “medical detox”, “evening IOP”, “dual diagnosis”.

Distance

How far your location is from the searcher. You can't move your building, but you can win further out with stronger relevance and prominence — and residential programs can compete regionally where outpatient programs can't.

Prominence

How well known and trusted you are: reviews and replies, accreditations, mentions in local news, links from associations, hospitals and referral partners, and your overall search presence.

The checklist

The 14 items we fix first on every profile. Most centers we look at are missing at least half.

Have us check yours
Primary category matched to your main level of care
Secondary categories for every other program you run
Services listed for each level of care, with descriptions
Business description written for families, not keywords
Admissions hours — including 24/7 lines where true
Website link to the right program page, tagged for tracking
Photos of the facility, rooms and team — never patients
Q&A seeded with the questions admissions hears daily
Weekly posts on programs, staff and community work
Attributes such as accessibility and languages offered
Name, address, phone identical to your site and listings
Review replies that never confirm someone was a patient
Duplicate listings found and merged or removed
Spam competitors reported when they break Google's rules

Location pages

Location pages that aren't thin

Google ignores pages that swap one city name for another. A location page earns rankings when it answers what a family in that place actually needs to know:

  • How to reach you from that area, and how long it takes
  • Which levels of care are offered at that location
  • Insurers accepted and how verification works
  • Nearby hospitals, courts and referral partners you work with
  • The clinicians who practise there, with credentials
  • Local resources and support groups for families

Citations & listings

The listings that matter for treatment

Consistent listings on trusted sites confirm you exist, where you are and what you do. We prioritise the ones that carry weight in behavioral health:

  • SAMHSA's FindTreatment.gov locator, where you're eligible
  • Your state licensing agency's facility listings
  • Accreditation pages (for example The Joint Commission or CARF)
  • Psychology Today and treatment directories you choose to be on
  • Local chamber, BBB and hospital or community resource lists
  • Apple Business Connect and Bing Places

Reviews

Reviews without breaking patient privacy

Reviews are part of prominence, but treatment centers can't play the review game the way a restaurant does. Confirming that a reviewer was a patient — even in a friendly reply — can be a privacy violation, and buying, gating or incentivising reviews breaks Google's policies.

What works instead:

  • Reply to every review with a template that thanks without confirming care
  • Invite feedback from families, alumni and referral partners where your policies allow it
  • Move clinical complaints offline to a named contact, quickly
  • Flag reviews that break Google's policies, and document it

We give your team the reply templates and a simple weekly routine, reviewed by your compliance lead.

Outpatient vs residential

Proximity works differently for each level of care

Outpatient and IOP clients need to reach you several times a week, so they search close to home and distance dominates. Residential and detox families will travel — often across the state — so prominence and program pages carry more weight than your exact address. We set targets per level of care: tight local grids for IOP, regional and state-level pages for residential.

Multi-location groups

One profile, one page, one set of signals per location

Each location needs its own verified Business Profile, its own location page with that site's levels of care and clinicians, and its own tracking. We structure the site so locations support each other instead of competing, and report every location separately and together.

What goes wrong

Six local SEO mistakes we see at almost every rehab

Most centers aren't missing one big thing. They're losing ground to a handful of small, fixable problems.

Profile link goes to the homepage

A family searching for detox lands on a page about everything. Link each profile to the program page that matches its main category.

One category for every program

If detox, residential and IOP all hide behind one category, Google can't match you to half the searches you should appear for.

Old names and numbers everywhere

Rebrands, call-tracking numbers and old addresses scattered across directories make Google less sure you're who you say you are.

Location pages that swap city names

Near-duplicate pages don't rank and can drag the rest of the site down. Fewer, genuinely local pages outperform dozens of thin ones.

Reviews left unanswered

Silence reads as neglect to families and to Google. A compliant reply, fast, is always better than none.

No way to see what's working

Without grid tracking and call tracking, you can't tell whether a change helped. We set both up in week one.

Prominence

Local link building in behavioral health

Links from other local organizations are one of the clearest prominence signals Google has. In behavioral health the best ones come from relationships you already have — they just aren't online yet.

  • Referral partners: hospitals, psychiatrists, therapists and EAPs who send clients to you
  • Professional associations: state and national provider associations and member directories
  • Community work: recovery events, family education nights, sponsorships and alumni programs
  • Local media: clinicians commenting on local addiction and mental health stories
  • Podcasts and panels: recovery and healthcare shows that link to their guests

We never buy links. Paid link schemes are against Google's guidelines and a real risk for a health brand.

FAQ

Local SEO for rehab centers: FAQ

How long does local SEO take for a rehab center?

Business Profile fixes often show movement within weeks. Consistent top-three positions across a service area usually take 60–120 days, longer in dense metro markets.

Which Google Business Profile category should a rehab use?

The one that best matches your main level of care, with secondary categories for your other programs. The right choice depends on what you're licensed for; we check your competitors' categories before choosing.

Can we rank in cities where we don't have a location?

Not in the Maps pack — Google won't show you there without a real location. Residential and detox programs can still rank in regular search results with genuinely useful regional pages.

Should we use a virtual office to appear in more cities?

No. Google's guidelines don't allow virtual offices for Business Profiles, and suspensions in this industry are common and slow to fix.

Do you manage our Google Business Profile for us?

Yes — with your team as owner. We're added as a manager, and you keep full control of the profile at all times.

Can we use a call-tracking number on our Business Profile?

Yes, if it's set up correctly: the tracking number as the primary phone and your main line as an additional number, so your listings stay consistent everywhere else.

How many location pages should a rehab have?

One per real location, plus a small number of genuinely useful regional pages for residential and detox programs. Quality beats quantity; thin city pages can hurt the whole site.

Is local SEO enough on its own?

For outpatient programs it's often the biggest lever. Residential and detox programs also need strong program pages, authority and AI visibility to compete beyond their immediate area.
